This Policy Brief was produced by Shabaka as part of a Capstone Project of the International School on Climate Mobilities (ISCM), co-hosted by Earth Refuge and the School of Oriental and African Studies(SOAS), University of London in 2023. This collaborative project was carried out by participants of the 2023 ISCM program.

This policy brief is the culmination of a global collaboration effort that would not have been possible without the time and commitment of the contributors.

Environmental-related disasters, such as earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes, floods, and tsunamis, can have devastating effects on societies, including loss of life, infrastructure damage, and economic decline. Due to climate change, the devastating effects of disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity (IPCC, 2023). In response to such disasters, diaspora communities – groups of people who migrated from their countries of origin, and their descendants, who now reside in settlement countries – often play a significant role in providing support and assistance to their home countries and communities.
