Sudan Diaspora Crisis Mapping
Shabaka is conducting research on how the Sudanese diaspora across the UK are
responding to the current crisis in Sudan.
We would like to hear from you about your experiences of providing assistance to
family and friends in Sudan, or of helping loved ones to evacuate.
We want to recognise and document the diaspora’s contributions to Sudan, in
times of crisis and in support of longer-term reconstruction and development.
This research is supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) –
the UN migration agency – in Sudan and UK. It seeks to identify ways in which the
Sudanese diaspora in the UK are responding to the current crisis in Sudan, and
how these responses can be better supported.

You can choose your language preference, English or Arabic.
All answers will be anonymous, used only in aggregate, and will be stored securely in line with
the UK Data Protection Act1. The survey will take around 15 minutes and is targeted to
members of the Sudanese diaspora in the UK, and those with a strong connection to Sudan.

Background
The Sudanese diaspora in the UK form the largest Sudanese community in Europe, and they remain influential because of the UK’s position as a post-imperial migration, education, and financial hub. The energy and accomplishments of the diaspora have steadily built Sudan’s reach and reputation around the world.
On 15 April 2023 , armed conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in the capital Khartoum and other major cities . Serious casualties are reported, and the death toll is rapidly increasing.

However, the Sudanese diaspora have been first responders to previous crises in Sudan, and they have
been active in responding to the current crisis since 15 April, mobilising cash and non-cash
resources for relief and medical supplies and conducting crisis advocacy and media
engagement to raise global awareness of humanitarian needs in the country. (Shabaka, 2023)

What is the purpose of the study?

Sudan has the potential to draw enormous benefits from engaging the diaspora,
which has been growing for more than 50 years. The energy and accomplishments
of members of the diaspora have steadily built Sudan’s reach and reputation in the world.
The Sudanese diaspora have supported Sudan throughout its history, in good times and in times
of crisis. The diaspora’s responses to the current crisis in Sudan are no different, but these are
unfortunately not recognised by many traditional humanitarian agencies and organisations.
Shabaka and IOM want to build awareness and understanding of the diverse ways in which the
Sudanese diaspora in the UK are contributing to the current crisis response in order to better support
their efforts, and advocate for policies – in the UK, in Sudan, and internationally – that can enable the
Sudanese diaspora to mobilise and strengthen connections with Sudan.

The purpose of the study is to understand more about the Sudanese diaspora in the United Kingdom,
how they are responding to the current crisis in Sudan and to reflect the contributions and diversity
within this community. This will address intergenerational diversity, gender, and other demographics
to ensure representation of all communities, and to increase understanding and knowledge base in
relation to Sudanese diaspora engagement.
The success of this study will rely on the engagement of the Sudanese diaspora in the UK and their
willingness to share their experiences, contributions, and challenges through our research methods
listed below.
الغرض من الدراسة هو فهم المزيد عن المهاجرين والمهاجرات السودانيين في المملكة المتحدة، وكيف يستجيبون للأزمة الحالية في
السودان، ولعكس المساهمات والتنوع داخل هذا المجتمع. ستشمل الدراسة التنوع بين الأجيال، والجنس، والتركيبة السكانية الأخرى
لضمان تمثيل جميع فئات المجتمع، وزيادة الفهم والمعرفة فيما يتعلق بمشاركة السودانيين في المهجر.
سيعتمد نجاح هذه الدراسة على مشاركة السودانيين في المملكة المتحدة واستعدادهم لمشاركة خبراتهم وإسهاماتهم وتحدياتهم من
خلال أساليب البحث المدرجة أدناه.
The overarching aim of the mapping is to inform effective diaspora engagement in response
to the current crisis in Sudan, and to support reconstruction and sustainable development in
the longer-term. The project will also provide an additional platform for the Sudanese
diaspora to augment and coordinate their response and support their communities amidst
the ongoing crisis.

What is the problem?

Public data sets on diaspora are difficult to disaggregate, as typically, this does not take into account
second or subsequent generations, who are not captured in censuses in settlement countries.
The paucity of data and the lack of understanding of Sudanese diaspora, diversity, skills, and their
interests have compromised the effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability of their engagement in
Sudan.
This project aims to contribute to evidence-based diaspora engagement policies and programming in
Sudan by enhancing the availability of accurate and actionable data and information on the Sudanese
diaspora.

Inclusivity

The project will ensure to highlight all generations of the Sudanese diaspora along
with those that are vulnerable to being marginalised.
This includes:
– Perspectives and experiences of Sudanese women in the diaspora
– The elderly: Sudanese diaspora community members who are 70+.
– People with disabilities, and visual and hearing impairments
– People who are not digitally literate: Members of the Sudanese community who are
not used to using digital technology but still actively engaged in Sudanese diaspora community
– Generation 1.51, second and subsequent generations.
