Shabaka’s Sudan Programme was created in April 2023 as a direct result of the outbreak of the armed conflict.
Two specific projects enhancing technology and medicine came out of this: Telemedicine and Simulation Based Education.
These were driven by Dr Sara Ibrahim Abdelgalil and Dr Zeinab Hamid and have had incredible results with super limited resources.

Episode 5, Part Two
In our latest and final episode of our series we look at the challenges and successes of the telemedicine project and in particular what the future might look like.
As Dr Sara Ibrahim Abdelgalil says, it’s all about the partnerships between diaspora actors, institutions and the private sector. We should disabuse ourselves of the notion that the Diaspora will plug the gaps and do this work for free and potentially incurring risk themselves. Their dedication not only needs to be recognised, it needs to be rewarded.

Episode 5, Part One
Our latest episode shifts the focus onto telemedicine.
“Telemedicine is not a new concept but it’s different now. At the beginning of the war, people could not leave their houses, they would be shot. A pregnant lady in labour was killed in front of the labour ward. So it was important to provide support for families who couldn’t leave their houses because of the risk of armed violence.
So the diaspora from all over the world, volunteered. We have lists and lists of doctors all around the world who say “this is our personal number, contact us any time of day, we are here to help you””.

Episode 4
“The international community have a bureaucratic, traditional way of taking and approaching humanitarian response. And that was one of the major issues with Sudan, because those responsible for the response are unfamiliar with mutual aid groups and therefore there has be flexibility, adaptation and modification to their standard procedures. And this is what the international community learned from the story of Sudan.” Dr Sara Ibrahim Abdelgalil discusses one of the many ways we challenge traditional response in this far-reaching episode.
Episode 3
In this episode we see how the team collaborated with Full Code Medical, Meta and Oxford Medical Simulation to allow students and post-graduates to continue their disrupted education both in Sudan and also neighbouring countries, thanks to the volunteer facilitators.

Sara Ibrahim Abdelgalil and Zeinab Hamid talk about the origins of Simulation Based Education and how they faced down challenges of using this technology in the Global South when the prevailing wisdom was that “it will never work there”.
